UpBeat – Artists on the Rise: CizLight

Our second feature in this auspicious series showcases an incredibly talented female singer-songwriter. Delight Cizanne “CizLight” Peter is from Portsmouth, Dominica, and grew up in a family of educators and musicians — every lyricist’s dream! “My family is very musical; my uncle gave me my first guitar and my aunt taught me a few basic chords. I guess it runs in the family.”

Cizanne “CizLight” Peter

She first discovered her love for singing and performing at church, and promptly became a regular singer of the Responsorial Psalm at the Portsmouth Roman Catholic Church. Since then, she’s flourished as an artist, posting and live streaming her recent works on her Instagram @_de.li.ght_, and participating in the 2020 Junior Calypso Monarch, where she placed 2nd runner up with her song “My Pledge” written by Fitzroy Hilton. She currently leads vocals for her school band at the St. John’s Academy.

CizLight is drawn to an acoustic sound and on her Instagram streams, it’s usually just her and her guitar. “I prefer acoustic because it helps capture and bring out the emotion in a song compared to music compiled with digital instruments. The guitar is also one of the easiest instruments to play while singing.” When it comes to composition, she focuses primarily on the melody, which comes first, then the lyrical content. “It may take an hour — or months; it all depends on how inspired I feel.” To deal with the occasional writer’s block, Cizanne falls back on some “old soul” music and hopes a particular lyric will be a trigger. As a self-proclaimed perfectionist, she tends to tweak the final product once or twice before sharing it with the world.

“I’m not usually inspired by specific individuals. My songs are often based on random thoughts and imaginary situations.”

Cizanne does have a few favourite artists though, she listed Khalid, Cavetown, The Weeknd, and Aya Nakamura. “My favourite songs at the moment are “Slow Dancing in the Dark” by Joji and “Here Comes a Thought” by Steven Universe.” Her ultimate goal is to create relatable music that is an escape for both her and her listeners.
